Editorial note

This previously unpublished memory book from Khoshmat is divided into several sections. For different reasons, the author was unable to publish this document during his lifetime. It is also clear that the author never stopped working on it, making constant additions and changes. The copy that we obtained did not have clearly delineated sections. For this reason, we divided the document into distinct chapters ourselves.

We have omitted some of the original entries from our site. These mostly concern the prehistoric and ancient history of Palu, including lengthy and, in our opinion, rather dull citations from European authors. We have preserved the author’s original style and language in the Armenian version of the work, only altering the text to correct orthographic mistakes. We also received the English translation alongside the original Armenian. In other words, the document was not translated into English by the Houshamadyan team.

We would like to thank Martin Chakoian, the author’s grandson, who participated in the process of editing and publishing this document. We would also like to express our special gratitude to Janet Evans Houser, who traces her roots to Khoshmat and who spearheaded the project of publishing this memory book.

Here, we quote a letter from Janet Evans Houser, where she describes the different phases of the "History of Khoshmat" publication:

"My grandfather, Mardiros H. Chakoian, began writing it in 1939. This project was sponsored by the Tbrotsasirats Union of Khoshmat in Providence, Rhode Island where there was a large community of Khoshmatsis. It was founded in 1903, as the Khoshmat Aid Society, one of the earliest organizations of its type in the United States. My grandfather worked on this book project collaboratively with other emigres. In 1952, when the manuscript was completed, a disagreement occurred within the leadership of the Khoshmat Society and they refused to publish it. My grandfather died in May of that same year. The manuscript was wrapped up in brown paper and placed in storage. It passed to my mother Eleanor (his only daughter) who kept it until her death in 2015 and then to me. The original notebooks are now located in Seattle, Washington, where they are maintained by Martin Chakoian, the author’s eldest grandson".
