Father Khachadur Shiroian
In ancient times the priests and high-ranking clergymen played a big role in villages. That’s the reason why so many odes were dedicated to them. The clergymen of Khoshmat made their contributions to the educational and religious spheres of the village. We will highlight two of them.
Rev. Khachadur Shiroian is famous in Palu for his courage and hospitality. The following incident comes to prove the power and philanthropy of this man.
In 1877, during the Russio-Turkish war, the Turkish General led his army to join the IV Corps in Garin/Erzurum. At first, he advanced towards Nbshi and then he moved to Nerkhi. However, when he tried to feed his exhausted soldiers there, he faced the protest of the villagers; they announced that they couldn’t procure food for the army. The General tried to get to Khoshmat, which is a bit far from Nerkhi. When his army reached the threshing floors of Khoshmat, the General informed the priest of the village that he would like to meet him.
Sending his greetings to the leader of the army, Der Hagop Shiroian said, “If tհe General wants to show respect to the people of Khoshmat, he can come to my house with his army. However, if his intention is to use violence against the villagers, he’d better leave the village together with his starving soldiers."
The General was very surprised to get such an audacious response and, nevertheless, went to the house of Shiroian family with his army. After greeting the priest, the General confessed that his soldiers were starving and didn’t know how soon any food would be delivered. Der Hagop stood up and responded: "We sincerely respect the soldiers of our king as long as they operate within the limits of the law. Should they ever break the laws, they can forget about our support…"
Suddenly the General noticed that Der Hagop was armed. He magically became friendlier and more respectful to the priest. Der Shiroian ordered his family members and neighbors to warm up shajs (a flat, thin, round tin plate on which bread and pastry are made) and feed the entire army. Surprised by the hospitality of the priest, the General wrote a poem [in Turkish] on the spot and devoted it to the people of Khoshmat:
Nerkhi ilen Nbrshi,
Doyoormediler bir gishi,
Akh, gidi Khoshmatun Keshishi,
Doyoordi bin gishi,
O de heppi tava ishi,
