Harutiun Deradurian and the Incident with the Box of Eggs

The subordinates of Rushdi Bey were as barbaric and filled with hatred as their leader. Settled in Khoshmat, near the spring “Ag”, they were constantly thinking whose house to rob next or what to demand from poor villagers who had to procure anything these bandits would want.

One day Hasan and Hussein met Harutiun Deradurian and ordered him to get a box of thirty-two eggs for them. Harutiun invited these bandits into his house to show them that he didn’t own even a single chicken and hence it would be impossible for him to carry out their order. The subordinates of the bey took out their whiplashes and started hitting Harutiun until they exhausted themselves. Harutiun could hardly breathe.

At that moment the head of the village, J. Kaloian (Shaghugian,) accompanied by Manug Vartian, came in and saw what was happening. Manug Vartian turned to Harutiun and said: "Hey, Harut, show your courage and hit them at least once!"
Upon hearing these words of encouragement, Harutiun pulled himself together and attacked Hasan. When Hasan fell to the ground, Harutiun immediately took away his whiplash and started hitting him with it. The other subordinate of the bey ran away in fear. Then the head of the village intervened and stopped the fight.

To escape any repercussions from this incident, Harutiun decided to leave the village. Eventually he moved to Canada, where he was able to create a great family. Unfortunately, he died very soon thereafter, passing away in 1948 in Montreal.
