Part V
Chapter 1 : Notorious Beys of Palou
During the reign of Sultan Mahmud, Sultan Majid, and Sultan Aziz, the Armenians and almost all the subservient nations led comparatively peaceful lives. Sultan Aziz, who had quite liberal ideas, even decided to grant rights to the nations subservient to him. Unfortunately, some ministers didn’t let this plan to come into action and conspired against the king.
In 1867 Sultan Aziz was invited to the exhibitions held in Paris and in major European countries as a guest of honor. Frustrated Turkish pashas decided to dethrone the king. One morning when Sultan Aziz woke up, he heard cannons roaring. He was greatly surprised to know that in this way, the nation was being informed of the accession to the throne by their new king, Sultan Murad V. During the reign of Sultan Murad, the Ottoman Armenians still had many privileges everywhere. Some of them even held Ministerial positions.
In 1876, with Hamid’s accession to the throne, the Turkish policy toward the Armenians dramatically changed. Sultan Hamid organized regiments out of bandits and criminal gangs whose mission was to rob the Armenian people living in villages. Sultan Hamid made huge efforts to turn the Kurds and Armenians people into enemies.
In 1887, in the darkest times of extermination of the Armenian nation, the first sparks of revolution emerged. With the consent of Hamid, the beys of Palu invaded Armenian villages to rob them and occupy their lands. They created an independent authority in Palu, turning the lives of Armenians into a nightmare. 365 Armenian, Kurdish, and Turkish inhabited villages including Khoshmat started to live in fear and horror.
