Trial of the Beys

Frustrated with their defeat, Rushdi and Ibrahim Beys brought suit against the villagers in the court of Palu. They hoped that this time they would win the case, even if they had to bribe the Turkish jury they were already in a close relationship with. This way they could attack Khoshmat without fear of consequences.

Foreseeing the danger, the people of Khoshmat collected 40 signatures in support of holding the trial in Diyarbekir/Dikranagerd and achieved that outcome. At the same time, they wrote letters of complaint and sent them off to the upper villages of Palu that surrounded these two evil brothers.

Unfortunately, all these villages refused to sign that letter for fear that their family members could be killed in reprisal. Only Mr. Avedis Mkhsiyan from Sakrat had the courage to sign the letter of complaint written by the people of Khoshmat.

Nonetheless, due to the reasonable measures taken by the people of Khoshmat—Bedros Effendi Fermanian (a government official,) Mr. Manug Vartian, Mr. Mardiros Dzaghigian, and Mr. Sdepan Milidosian—the villagers managed to win the case. The Beys were sentenced to fifteen years to life in prison in Constantinople.

But the story was not over. With the help of Jemal Bey they were taken to the prison of Urfa instead of Constantinople. Four years later, after the adoption of the Constitution, they were released through the intervention of the Committee of Union and Progress. They returned to Sakrat where they had once built their castles.

The people of Khoshmat enjoyed their freedom till the massacre of 1915.
During the First World War the vengeful Beys snatched at a chance and rushed to Khoshmat. They gathered the villagers who were about to move to Kurdish-inhabited villages and took them to the slaughterhouse of Palu where they were axed and thrown into the Aradzani River. Still not content, the Beys returned to Khoshmat, gathered the rest of the villagers along with the fugitive soldiers (amele taburu,) Armenian soldiers working on the road, and exiles from Mush (approximately 3000 people.) The Beys took all these people to the house of Milidosian family and set them on fire.

These acts of violence, vandalism and extermination, will fill the bloody pages of "The History of Khoshmat" and will be always remembered from generation to generation. Out of 1500 villagers only 100 people managed to survive this massacre.
