The End of the Beys

In the terrifying days of war, the forces of Kharpert crossed the bloody Aradzani River, filled with the bodies of dead Armenians, and reached the field of Palu as they advanced on Russia. The officers persecuted the tyrant Beys and occupied their castles built in Sakrat. Rushdi Bey, who was unable to tolerate this kind of disrespect, ran away to Aleppo. There he heard about the [Armenian] volunteers from Khoshmat. He tried to convince the exiles from Khoshmat to move to Palu with him, promising to grant them freedom and rewards. After his offer was rejected by the villagers, he moved to Palu by himself, considering it to be the safest place for him to stay at the time.

When he learned that Rushdi Bey was in Palu, Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who was striving to become the head of the government, ordered the arrest and later the hanging of Rushdi Bey and his subordinates. His brother, Ibrahim Bey, also got retribution for his acts of violence. One could hear them pleading and begging for mercy while suffocating and burning alive in the flames. The body of the Bey was covered with bruises and wounds and smelled foully. After squirming in pain and anguish, he died.
