A Fragment of Volunteer’s Life
Here is how the volunteer Hovsep Ulusian described that incident: "One day Garabed Kzigian (from Hussenig), Simon Sarkisian, Garabed Ghazarian, and Hovsep Ulusian (all three from Khoshmat) went to do some shopping at the market. When they tried to pay the Turkish seller in French currency, the seller refused to accept the payment. He would only take Turkish money. Then the seller ran out of the market and complained to an officer about it. Five other policemen also heard about this incident and joined their colleagues. The Armenian boys tried to explain, saying that they were from America and because they were serving under the French flag, they only had French francs.
“The officer ordered the boys either to pay in Turkish currency or return the products that had bought and leave the market. Garabed Kzigian unexpectedly slapped the officer in the face; the officer immediately fell to the ground. Hovsep and the other friends attacked the policemen as well; three of them dropped to the ground while the other two ran away.”
“After all this fuss the security guards came and arrested the Armenian boys. The Turkish police officer who came to the market first died half an hour later. His dead body was taken to the square. In order to take revenge on the Armenians, an Arabian Commander fired his gun into the air, thus attracting the attention of the Muslims. Upon hearing those sounds, the Turks together with the policemen attacked the Armenian Legionnaires. This is how the horrific fight began.”
“All the Legionnaires who were near the square rushed to help their friends. Some of them went to the army camp asking their Commander to provide them with ammunition and soldiers. However, the Commander not only forbade them to return to the fight, but he also called back the Legionnaires who were sounding the trumpet outside.”
“During this fight one Armenian volunteer died and a few others were injured. Hovsep Ulusian from Khoshmat remained in hospital for two months, his hand permanently disabled. The Turkish army lost 75 soldiers. The number of wounded soldiers was 150.”
