Chapter 6 : People of Khoshmat in Constantinople (Taken from the notes of the late Toros Klanian)

In 1873 the people of Khoshmat living in Constantinople bought a wonderful bell worth 75 Ottoman gold coins and sent it to the Holy Mother of God in Khoshmat, which was preserved till 1916. In 1875 they bought a room in Chukhur Cheshma worth 100 Ottoman gold coins and donated it to the school of Khoshmat. In 1883 they bought another room in Chukhur Cheshma worth 125 Ottoman gold coins and donated it to the school of Khoshmat as well.

In 1888 the school of Khoshmat was handed over to the care of the United Association of Armenians. For this reason, thanks to Boghos Effendi Dzaghigian, the money collected in the church of Constantinople on Saturdays was sent to Khoshmat.

Mr. Hagop Klanian donated a silk curtain and Shahin Shahrigian donated a chalice and supplies necessary for the priests of Khoshmat. Mr. Avedis Bedigian also contributed greatly to this.

Church of Khoshmat and priests

Hagop Klanian has spent almost all his life in Constantinople working as a mason. In 1909, after the adoption of the Turkish Constitution, Jacob’s son made him return to Khoshmat with a flowery altar curtain and a chalice. Unfortunately, his life was very short. He was a religious, peaceable man whose life was truly impeccable. He died a natural death at the age of 68. His wife Yeghsig and other members of his family were martyred in the Genocide of 1915 except for one son, Bedros, who managed to survive the massacre hiding in wheat sheaves for a month and returning to the village afterwards. When Peni Effendi (the Klanian family used to cultivate his fields) heard about the return of Bedros, he immediately ordered his men to go to Khoshmat and inform Bedros that the village was not a safe place for him to stay. Bedros was told that Effendi wanted to shelter him for some time till justice was rendered again. Bedros believed them and joined these people who killed him on the way, in the canyon Chrmgeg. Everyone in the village knew that this was the command of Effendi. This incident was witnessed by Mrs. Varvar Simonian Nigoghosian. She lives in Providence with her two sons Garabed and Toros, Minas’s son Misak (her grandchild,) and Garabed’s daughter Elizabeth/Yeghisapet who was born in Providence.
