Introduction

In 1939 the Tbrotsasirats Union of Khoshmat published a "History of Khoshmat" to reveal the remarkable role that Khoshmat and its inhabitants played in the past in modern times. We put our hand to the plough in 1946, filled with deepest gratitude to the Union.

We have neither a philological nor folkloristic background. However, our devotion to the work and deep understanding of the topic make it possible for us to carry out this project.

Our work has been somewhat simplified due to the Union, the members of which provided us with important information and documents approved by the Mekhitarists in Venice and by Khoshmat inhabitants from different cities of Aleppo, Marseille, and Constantinople, as well as from Egypt, Canada, and the US. We would like to express our deepest appreciation for these individuals who have greatly simplified our challenging task by providing their letters, comments, notes, photos, and important information. We will reference their names when we start speaking about the documents they have contributed.

For now, we express our special thanks to Mr. Sarkis Klanian for gathering authentic, valuable information which served as the basis for this book. His encouraging letters served as an incentive for the project. We also highly appreciate the help of the publishing committee’s president, Mr. Garabed Klanian, for his tireless efforts and for his encouraging words.

Many other people supported us in accomplishing our goal. I feel compelled to express my gratitude to His Grace Bishop Sion Manugian for his professional instructions. Also, I would like to thank one of the stars shining over the world of Armenian literature, a friend of mine, Hagop Kuyumjian, for his words of encouragement and especially for the beautiful introduction of this book.

I have been away from Khoshmat since childhood, so it was difficult for me to remember everything about this place. In order to draw authentic information, I turned to witnesses for help and carefully studied the history of the territory of Palu. The committee had provided me with much essential information but in addition I learned other important things from both Armenian and foreign publishing houses, the list of which can be found at the end of the book. Finally, I had fun working on this difficult project, confident that “The History of Palu and

Khoshmat" will describe our motherland to the greatest extent possible, ensuring its everlasting glory.
