Vartan Vartanian

This selfless and generous man has made an invaluable contribution which will live on even after his death. He has provided all the engraved images of the Tbrotsasirats Union at my request. Mr. Vartanian, who has a strong sense of patriotism, high ecclesiastical spirit, and dedication to charitable activities, is devoted to helping and supporting all people in need. He made contributions even in Antelias, taking one student under his wing and making 500 dollars in yearly donations. Every year he donates to the students of Saint Hagop Cathedral and generally shows much interest in the younger generation of Armenia.

Mr. Vartanian was born in Kharpert, Mezre, during the bloody days of 1915. Since childhood he has lived the life of a nomad with his brothers, sisters and mother, finally reaching Aleppo. His 17-year-old brother, a fresh graduate of Getronagan School of Mezre and a talented violinist, was kidnapped in Malatia. No one has ever heard of him since. In Aleppo Vartan and his siblings were taken to the orphanage of Rev. Aharon Shirajian. They lived there for five years and had the misfortune to lose their mother during this time. Their father, Mr. Hagop Vartanian, had left the village of Chnkush and moved to Chicago before the war. He was able to bring his children from Aleppo to America but died a year later.

Graduating from Lane Technical College, Vartan started studying at Hand Engraving School. A year later he had completed the entire course and started his own business managing several factories. Today he is married with four children and is held in high regard among Armenians. Vartan was greatly affected by the difficulties he had faced during his childhood. Witnessing the vandalism of Turkish people with his own eyes and experiencing sufferings the hard way made him into a patriot, a benefactor and a god-fearing man.
