Toros Klanian

Photo: Toros Klanian of Providence, RI, born at Khoshmat in 1860, was educated in Khoshmat and Constantinople. In 1913 he came to this country. As a construction contractor he has built many houses in Providence He is one of the best supporters of the Khoshmat School Aid Association. He has helped the author compiling the history of Khoshmat, especially in the ancestral list. Mr. Toros was fatally injured and died in an automobile accident on 10 November 1947. He was 87 years old.

He was born in Khoshmat in 1860. He received primary education in the village and left for Constantinople with his father. During the 1890s, he took part in the demonstration of Bab Ali. Barely escaping the massacre, he left for the New World. Once in America, he settled in Providence, where he became one of the founders of the Tbrotsasirats Association. Then, to appease his longing for his motherland, he returned to his hometown through Beirut. Learning of his arrival, the Government of Turkey arrested him and sent him back to Beirut, handcuffed, and on May 15, 1907, to America. In 1908, the Constitution of Turkey enabled Toros to be the first person to return to the country. Becoming a member of the District Council, he actively promoted the development of his village.

Toros’s sharp mind and brave behavior in the presence of beys fed the hostile attitude towards him. In 1913 he was forced to return to America for the last time. There he engaged in construction work, building tandoors and shops.

Toros Klanian was one of the most outstanding person among the Khoshmat native Armenians of Providence. He was an irreplaceable member of the Tbrotsasirats Association and was engaged in national, religious and charitable activities, serving the Ramgavar Party for many years. Apart from being one of the members of the publishing committee of "The History of Palu, Khoshmat," he also helped directly with compiling the history of Khoshmat, especially in the ancestral list. Unfortunately, on Nov.10, 1947, at the age of 87 he died in an automobile accident.
