Bedros Papazian (“Hunchak”)

Bedros Papazian was born in 1870 in Khoshmat and died on April 10, 1931 in Providence.

After receiving his primary education at the school of the village, he got married quite young and left for Constantinople to study architecture. Filled with vengeance during the dark, horrific, and catastrophic days, he joined the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party. He took part in the Demonstration of Bab Ali where his presence was vital. After publication of the newspaper "Hunchak" in Europe, whenever Bedros was in Constantinople he delivered samples.

Every time people noticed Bedros from a distance, they would whisper in each other’s ears, "Hunchak is coming." He got his name from the newspaper he was working for and he was known among people with this nickname till his death. Despite being pursued by the Turkish Government, "Hunchak" managed to leave for Bulgaria; later he moved to America.

In 1908 the Constitution of Turkey enabled him to take his family to Providence from Khoshmat. Later he became a father of two daughters. During the First World War he worked for the American government, contributing to the construction of bridges, avenues and buildings. "Hunchak" was a brave, daring, patriotic, and religious man. He died in Providence of old age.
