Boghos H. Chakoian
Boghos was born in 1893 in Khoshmat. In his childhood he had the misfortune to lose his father, Hagop, who died young of pneumonia. Shortly after that, all the people living in Khoshmat suffered a terrible economic crisis due to the massacre led by the Red Sultan. In those calamitous days under poor economic conditions, Boghos’ mother took care of her son, folding him to her breast. One day, taking him and her other son with her, she left for Kharpert (Harput.) Here Boghos was sent to an orphanage. He received his education at Euphrates College, starting at the lower levels and gradually moving up to college courses.
In 1914 he went to see the Saint Garabed Monastery (Mush) with his friends. On the way back, when he was lagging far behind his friends, suddenly he heard a Kurdish man shout and saw that man coming directly to him with a dagger in his hand.
In 1915, before the Armenian Genocide, when Euphrates College closed, Boghos went to Shabin Karahisar, the siege story of which is familiar to all Armenians. During the siege, Boghos and his friends participated in an unequal fight against a huge number of enemies. These valorous fights had terrible consequences because there was no external help when people inside were starving and short of cartridges and gunpowder. They made a desperate attempt to break the siege and succeeded. Unfortunately, this time Boghos was out of luck. During the fight with the Turkish troops he was killed, stabbed in the heart. On the spot where he died his comrades in arms laid him to rest with the greatest respect.
