Kokona Vartan
Kokona Vartan was an exceptional architect born in Charsanjak. Leaving for Constantinople at the age of 16, he started working under the patronage of a Greek architect by drawing layout plans and assisting his mentor.
In Constantinople Vartan strived to become the Greek architect’s assistant, but all in vain. One day when the Greek architect (khalfa) was busy designing the layout plan of a huge palace, he was suddenly called for an urgent meeting. In the absence of his mentor, Vartan attentively examined the layout plan and added a window to it. When the Greek mentor noticed the changes, he became mad at Vartan and reprimanded him for sticking his nose in his mentor’s business. Vartan apologized saying: "Teacher, don’t you think that window is really necessary? When you start putting the finishing touches to the project you will notice that the building will look even more lustrous, gorgeous and proportionate with that window.”
Thinking for a while, the Greek master said: "Vartan, I see you’re going to have a bright future as an architect. From this moment on you are my assistant." The same day the Greek Master gave Vartan the nickname "Kokona."
Due to his intelligence and commitment, Vartan became a remarkable architect who designed such structures as the military barrack, the school neighboring it, the custom house, and the Shishli sports hall. He also took part in the construction of Yildiz Palace. So, Vartan is known among people as “Kokona Vartan.” Kokona means a glorious great architect.
