Pottery

Just as Chinese people are known for their talent in making faience dishes of different types and forms, so the women of Palu were known for their love to pottery. They have been working in this sphere for ages.

Red clays or soils can be found on the red hills located on the southern side of Pourasdan (Khorodig). The villagers go to this place, load up, and return to the village to use these materials in pottery. These soils have specific chemical properties and consist of a great amount of silicon. First the villagers clean the soils and then they add some water to the dust. The whole operation may take a very long time. The potter then starts making various types of pots from this mixture.

These pots play a very important role in the daily life of the villagers. The potters make vessels, big and small pots, wheat and barley storages, churns (khnotsi), water jugs, water coolers, crockery (boodook,) deep clay pots (karghan,) grain containers, clay cups for drinking water, etc. All these clay vessels of different sizes, shapes, depth, and length are dried in the sun for a week. Then all are carefully baked, covered with bricks and dung. This is a solemn ceremony for the locals. Usually the villagers keep the fire burning for 48 hours. When the fire goes out, they give the vessels to their owners.
