Popular Medicine

The people of Khoshmat usually had no health problems. The location of the village, with its dry climate, scorching rays of the sun, cool fields and pastures, and cold springs (as a water source) reduced the likelihood of getting sick. If by chance the villagers did get sick, they used traditional medicine. It was nearly impossible to find even one doctor not only in Khoshmat, but throughout the entire territory of Palu. Armenian mothers always tried to cure family members with herbal medications.

Treatments of eye pain

1. Albumen is put on the eye
2. The milk of a woman breastfeeding a baby girl is dripped into the sickly eye
3. Alum is pulverized and applied to eyes
4. Juice of unripe grapes is dripped into the sickly eye
5. Dandelion root liquid is dripped into the sickly eye

Shiver (togh)

The patient infected by shivering usually has a fever. He is taken to the spring. People undress him and pour cold water over his body. The patient feels better after this procedure.

Earache

Roast an onion, add oil or shirig (sesame oil) and put the composition on a piece of cloth. Put the cloth on the sickly ear.

Toothache

Pull out the tooth or apply fragrant oil to a cigarette and put it on the rotten tooth.

Headache

Apply a warm compress (fabric–wrapped.)

Flu

Grind up the plant leaves of the Nicotiana family into a powder and snort it.

Jaundice

Jaundice is a disease which changes the color of the skin and the traits of the face. The only treatment is taking a rest and doing nothing at all. The person will recover over time.

Bellyache

The patient drinks the liquid of squeezed mint and sorrel or oghi (raki).

Pneumonia

The only thing one can do to cure pneumonia or any other similar serious diseases is pray, keep an amulet, make sacrifices in the names of different saints, read the Bible, or repent.

Snakebite

Suck the wound and spit it out. After getting rid of the dirty and poisoned blood, put a thin spider web on the wound, and bandage the wound (or use moldy bread instead).

Note: Our ancestors were familiar with the power of a spider web and mold. Today scientists are proud to have discovered penicillin. Few people know that the ‘’mother’’ of this medicine is actually mold.
