Things portending misfortune

Forebodings were at the center of attention of the naive inhabitants of Palu and became inseparable parts of their lives. Here are some examples showing how much influence these omens had on the villagers.

The people of Khoshmat were of firm belief that the color black was a sign of mourning and coming upsetting events. We all know that chickens can’t sing; instead they make sounds like "gu gu gu" before and after laying eggs. When a black chicken made such a sound trying to compete with the rooster, the household owner would immediately shout, "The call of a black chicken!" which has the same meaning as "something bad is going to happen!" The same refers to the call of black crows. A crow is a black carnivorous bird that very often perches on the nearest trees trying to sing with its crouching voice. People who accidently hear these sounds consider this as a sign of coming death.

Black cat

Cats play a very important role in the village as they are good at killing mice. That’s why they have access to any corner of the house; they can enter the barn, living-room, yard, stables and mows. Cats are the kings and queens of the house. Poor mices don’t dare to leave their dark holes and prefer staying there like prisoners. These naughty cats very often climb from one roof to another, crossing the streets as fast as possible in order not to be caught by the dogs. If the cat crossing the street happens to be completely black (not white, red or colorful,) and if it passes before a person walking along the same street, it is believed that very soon something bad will happen to that person.

Dog’s howling

One of the things portending misfortune is the howling of a dog. Dogs are very dedicated to their owners. They are very good protectors and thanks to their keen sense of smell, they can tell if there is a stranger approaching the house. If a stranger is around the house, they start barking. Very often dogs lie down on the ground to have a rest. They may have digestion issues and may see dreams. In any case, sometimes you can hear dogs howling. When the villagers hear these sounds, they have no doubt that something terrible is going to happen. And if a misfortune takes place even just by accident (a death, attack, robbery or just an unpleasant incident,) this is attributed to the howling of the dogs.
