Fragment of Sukias Depoian's Life
Once on a gloomy autumn morning the lumberjacks of Khoshmat were rushing with their mules to catch up with Sukias Depoian who was already walking towards the mountain. Finally, the lumberjacks reached the Khntsor Spring where Sukias was impatiently waiting for them. They all moved towards the mountain. They had to walk a narrow path designed only for one person or animal. When this group lined up on the mountain slope, suddenly they heard Kurdish men shooting from the crevices and threatening to kill them all unless they surrendered. The leader of the caravan, Sukias Depoian, turned to the Kurds, shouting: "We’ll give you anything you want but please have pity on us."
The bandits joyfully jumped out of crevices to steal the travelers’ mules. At this moment Sukias shouted in a hoarse and powerful voice: "Attack them with your pitchforks!"
The villagers started hitting the Kurds. When they were about to help Sukias as well, they saw that 10 Kurdish men were already lying dead on the ground. Taking away the enemy’s weapons, the people of Khoshmat returned to the village and celebrated their victory.
The wounded Kurds returned to their village and told their leader about this incident. The village headman together with twenty armed soldiers (the ones who had taken part in the fight) went to the Depoian family’s house and asked for a meeting with Sukias. Sukias fearlessly came out of the house and looked at the newcomers from head to toe in surprise. The Agha shouted at him: "Was it you and your friends who killed my soldiers:”
Without a minute to lose Sukias rushed back to his house and this time came out with his pitchfork saying: "Agha, it was not me who killed your soldiers; it was this holy weapon in hands of the people of Khoshmat…I can prove it to you right now, if you wish."
The Kurdish village headman turned to his soldiers and spit in their faces. He got off his horse, approached Sukias, kissed him on his forehead, kissed the pitchfork, and said: "This is truly a holy weapon!" Rewarding Sukias with 5 gold coins, the headman announced that from that moment on his soldiers and the people of Khoshmat would become friends.
