Mardiros Ghazarian
Mardiros was one of the most prominent architects of Khoshmat. Leaving the village at a very young age he moved to Constantinople. Due to his inborn talent and thanks to his experienced mentors, he achieved great success in the sphere of architecture.
Due to the skills and experience he gained by apprenticing under the leadership of educated architects of Europe, Mardiros became famous in a very short period of time. He was rewarded with the title "A handy man from Khoshmat."
One day the Sultan was walking in his half-built palace disguised as another person. Suddenly Mardiros walked in, looked at Sultan and said, "What are you looking at? We have no time to waste. Take this hammer and help me to build a perfect castle for His Majesty the King." Impressed with the talent, diligence, enthusiasm and loyalty of Mardiros, the king rewarded him with a special royal medal.
Mardiros was shocked every time he heard about the sufferings of his compatriots living in the province. He took an active role in revolution, obtaining confidential information for Armenian revolutionaries. After the Bab Ali demonstration he was exiled to his motherland Khoshmat together with other suspects. Here are a few incidents proving his courage and pride.
When the tower of a huge mosque located in Diyarbekir/Dikranagerd tilted, none of the architects of Constantinople dared to renovate it. One night, two policemen woke up 80-year-old Ghazarian and took him to Diyarbekir. Thinking that this was nothing but a provocation, the surprised architect immediately showed them his royal medal. Bowing down before the medal the soldiers said, "You are exactly who we are looking for!"
The great tower of the mosque built in Diyarbekir leaned and was in danger of collapse. All the architects of Constantinople were hopelessly trying to find a way out of this terrible situation, but in vain. When they reached Diyarbekir Mardiros immediately noticed the leaning building and announced that he would need assistants to repair it: Hovagim Tatigian, Boghos Klanian from Khoshmat and Bedros Arghntsian.
Two weeks later the tilted tower was straight and was looking directly to the sky. In gratitude for Ghazarian’s help, the Pasha rewarded him with 90 gold coins, though the architect humbly refused to accept the gift.
