Incident with Bedros Simonian
On May 13, 1903 when the exhausted farmers gathered under the roof of Harutiun Simonian’s house, the tax collectors came and asked for a meeting with Simonian. Bedros Simonian informed them that the owner of the house was too tired to meet and had gone to bed earlier. He offered the police officers to speak to him if it was something urgent. The tax collectors opened their calendar of military taxes and announced that the total sum the head of the family had to pay was 36 mejid because there were eighteen men living in the house. The policemen demanded that the home-owner pay the taxes immediately. When Bedros told one of the policemen that he would only give the money to Zilfikhar Effendi personally, the policeman started swearing and attacked Boghos with his sword. Bedros quickly disarmed him, snapped the sword into two pieces, and threw it away.
The policeman shouted: "You broke the king’s sword and threw it away! Hey, people of Khoshmat, how are you going to deal with the king’s revenge?" Sarkis Muradian, who was present during this incident, replied to the policeman: "We respect our noble king, but your ignorance and arrogant behavior made us break your sword and throw it away. This is a lesson for you. So go, collect the pieces of the sword, and get out of here."
Later, a lawyer, Mardiros Dzaghigian, met the tax collector Zilfikhar Effendi and put an end to this issue.
