The Great Earthquake of Palu

As previously mentioned, Palu is surrounded by huge mountains. A lot of villages are situated next to the Krkur, Artsakh, and Garin Mountains; so it’s quite natural that when one of these mountains erupted or quaked, the villages were also shaken.

The worst earthquake that has ever happened in the Krkur Mountains was in 1789. This earthquake resulted in great loss of properties, assets and animals, leaving 510 people under ruins. That year is known as ‘’Zhazh year,’’ referring to the unforgettable earthquake. The Ottoman Government rushed to help the homeless and poor villagers.

Another earthquake happened in Garin/Erzurum in 1902 and reached the western borders of Palu. However, it didn’t cause major losses due to its lower intensity.

On July 25, 1910, a tremendous and continuous earthquake left a lot of animals under ruins. Many people were injured while others rushed to the streets half- asleep, spending the night on the threshing floors. Fortunately, as it was a cool and bright summer night, a lot of villagers were working in the wheat fields at that moment, so only a few of the villagers experienced any suffering. These continuous shakings continued till August 17, keeping the villagers in constant fear. The Government allocated 2000 Ottoman gold coins for the needs of the sufferers.
