PART I

Chapter 2: Monasteries and Sanctuaries

Religion has always been a source of vitality and mental satisfaction for the people of Palu. The talented architects of Palu designed wonderful churches that have been preserved to this day.

Unfortunately, we have records of only three monasteries built in the province. The first one is the gorgeous monastery of Holy Mother of God located near the village Havav.

The second one is Til's Monastery (Tilavank.) The village Til located on the left bank of the Aradzani River is famous for its Holy Cross or Til’s Monastery. If we attentively examine the design of the monastery of the Holy Cross, we will notice that it is constructed the same way as Echmiadzin Cathedral.

The third is Arghni Monastery. Unfortunately, we have no information about this monastery.

The ruined church located in the village Tset and called Hai bad is also noteworthy. It is comprised of elements typical of ancient royal court estates. This half-destroyed church was renovated due to the efforts of the Prelate, Father Bartholomew Baghjian, it is called St. Sarkis. The grave of St. Sarkis is located behind the chapel.

According to a rural legend, after praying, endeavoring and inventing the Armenian alphabet in rooms carved out of stone, St. Mesrob moved to the fort of Palu. An Armenian man, Jishmit Bey Mahdesi, built his mansion in the village Tset and ruled the town of Palu for many years as beylerbey (governor-general).
