Khoshmatlian Dynasty and The Beys

According to legend, the native inhabitants of Khoshmat were Armenian noblemen who had lived in their palaces for ages. Their palaces were located above the waters of “Ag” (The Spring); one can still see the remnants of these buildings. This dynasty was one of the richest and most powerful in Palu. 365 villages populated by people of different ethnicities and forty-eight Armenian-inhabited villages were under their dominion.
In 1835 they left the palace they had lived in for ages and moved to a new one built in the remote valley of Khoshmat. This mistake had irreversible consequences for them, putting an end to the peaceful life they had been leading for twelve years.

Keor Abdullah Bey, who lived in a small palace a short distance away from the fascinating and fetching palace of the Khoshmatlian dynasty, became envious of their wealth and prosperous life. He used all iniquitous means to spread fear among the people of Khoshmat. He even dared to throw a plugged goose inside the palace through the window and poison the guard dogs. Sometimes the servants could barely get to the house after being harassed by the Kurds.

Consulting with his younger brother, Hovhannes Effendi Khoshmatlian decided to leave the palace and move to the city of Palu. Instead of following them, their two uncles left the palace and settled in Keghi. Hovhannes Effendi and his family settled in Amarat highland which was one hour away from the city and was located on the Krkur Mountains.

The Turkish and Armenian Beys (the Khoshmatlian family) were in a good relationship and would often even invite each other to their houses. When Keor Abdullah Bey’s son got married the Khoshmatlian family members were among the guests of honor. When the only son of Hovhannes Effendi, Mgrdich Effendi, won a horse racing competition with his Arabian horse, he received many gifts from the Beys. During the massacres of 1895 when the palace of Khoshmatlian family was besieged, Ibrahim and Rushdi Beys rushed to get there from Sakrat, saving the Khoshmatlian family and their royal residence. Mgrdich tore up the bill of 1000 Ottoman gold lira signed by the Beys in gratitude for their chivalry.

The descendants of the Khoshmatlian dynasty lived in Amarat and Keghi until the forced displacement of 1915; the Khoshmatlian family has gone down in history as one of the most powerful dynasties in the region.
